Recognition of the Barrio Logan Planning Group

October 7, 2014

This memorandum shall serve as the formal request to direct docket the recognition of the Barrio Logan Planning Group and appointment of initial membership at the City Council for the week of October 20, 2014.

Barrio Logan is one of the only communities in San Diego that has never been represented by a Planning Group. In light of recent efforts to develop a Community Plan Update, and upcoming development opportunities within the community boundaries, an official Planning Group is necessary and long-overdue.

My office has had numerous conversations with residents, property owners, and business owners that would like to give back to their community through service on a Community Planning Group. Through extensive one-on-one outreach, event attendance, and a recent well-attended town hall meeting, I know there is a significant desire for a Planning Group to address development issues within the community.

By hearing this item at Council this month, a designated Planning Group could be in existence by the end of this year, giving the initial Planning Group members crucial time to attend trainings, to begin the work of hearing important development items, and to provide beneficial advice to developers, Planning Commissioners, and our City Council. If we fail to act with expediency, our holiday meeting schedule will delay the Planning Group from forming until 2015.

After years of being unrepresented by a Planning Group, the community of Barrio Logan deserves the courtesy of our prompt attention to this important action.

Thank you for your assistance with docketing this matter.
